We are now over three weeks into the new year and many of us are well into our annual ‘new year, new me’ ritual. Studies show that for many of us, that will come to a halt in around three weeks time. The key is to be one of the few that keeps going and continues on to meet and crush your goals in 2017 and beyond.

Why beyond? People fail to realise that being fit and healthy is a lifestyle. It’s something that we should be looking at consistently, trying to become a better version of ourselves, each and every year. It shouldn’t just be a little burst of enthusiasm here and there, year after year. It’s for life.

Over the last couple of nights, we have given you four pointers on what you need to be doing to make 2017 the year you change your life. Be consistent, eat well, set goals and be accountable. These tools will be your guide for this year and beyond. Do them, and they will become habits. Speaking of habits, that brings us nicely to our next pointer.

#5. Creating good habits. Firstly, habits take the time to become something that we do without thought. Whether that be drinking 2.5 litres of waters a day, eating consistently well or exercising regularly, we shouldn’t expect these things to become second nature instantly. People will argue that it takes months for habits to become nothing but routine. Some say weeks, some say months.

We say it doesn’t matter. Just create them. Whether that be going to bed earlier during the week, not hitting the snooze button in the morning or writing a journal, whatever it is, do them consistently and you’ll be surprised how they become a part of your everyday routine.

#6. Surround yourself with positive people. The unhappy majority will always be louder than the happy minority, as the saying goes. Not happy with something? Change it. Whilst we appreciate that some things are harder to control than others, it is possible to ensure that we have people around us that lift us up and not drag us down. Make this the year that you distance yourself from negativity and rid yourself of the poison in your life. Be that friends, colleagues, your job, whatever it is, you owe it to yourself to be happy.
