Paleo. Atkins. 5:2. Dukan. “Well, all the celebrities are doing it, so I’ve got to do it. I’ve read it in a gossip mag, so it will work for me”.

Over the last few years, nutrition ‘trends’ have become big business. Multi-million-pound business. One comes along, and we try it. Another comes along and we give it a shot because such and such has done so, and so it goes on.

One thing that stands out in all of this is that many people really don’t really understand what ‘they’ need and not that women/man on the telly. Who, by the way, has £50 million in her/his bank account, a personal chef, and trains five days a week with a personal trainer.

Firstly, don’t believe everything you read. You’re all adults, so this may sound patronising, but, really, don’t. One thing we will say is that all these ‘trends’ have a place in the market. But that isn’t to say that all of them will work for you.

When you change anything, be it nutrition, fitness, or anything for that matter, you are changing ‘habits’. Mainly, bad ones. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be changing them, right?

This is the first thing you must understand. You are creating new habits that will provide the building blocks to success. Nutrition isn’t a one size fits all scenario. Change one at a time. Gradually, you begin to learn what works for you and what doesn’t. You’ll begin to understand yourself a lot more.

Secondly, understand a little on what body type you are. This will give you a better idea of how realistic or attainable your ‘vision’ is. This can relate back to your habits. Training, nutrition, and well-being can and will, differ.

Note: Body type isn’t the be all and end all to results, and remember, everyone is different and everyone is unique.

Thirdly, seek the advice of someone who knows what they are doing and has the knowledge to make sure that you follow the right guidelines and pathway, and can help you out with the above.

They will be able to tell you what quantities you should be having, what your daily calorie intake should be, and provide accountability. They will be able to offer feedback and make any adjustments needed, whilst educating you along the way.

Remember. You wouldn’t put diesel in a petrol engine. Just as you wouldn’t put the wrong foods into your ‘engine’.

And put the gossip mag down. You’re eating for you. Not others.
