In the past couple of weeks, we have seen another of the worlds ‘magic’ diets put to bed and put in its place and its creator, unfortunately for him, put away. But, what do expect when you pretend that you have PhD but in fact, you actually don’t. Well, not a real one anyway. We’re not doctors but it doesn’t take much to realise that kind of thing obviously isn’t going to fly in court.

The ‘Alkaline Diet’ eliminates such things as refined sugars, which to be fair is a good thing, along with carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables including peppers and tomatoes amongst others in the nightshade spectrum and limits the consumption of red meats.

Some of Hollywood’s biggest superstars jumped on the bandwagon as did some of sports most high profile players and some of the world’s highest paid supermodels. The Alkaline Diet made some big claims including its ability to fight cancer due to high pH levels within the body, but there has never been any scientific evidence to back up those lofty claims.

And that right there is the sticking point. There was no evidence based peer reviewed science to give the pH diet any kind of credibility. Finding what works for you and what doesn’t is important for all of us when it comes to what foods we consume.

The only positive of the ‘Alkaline Diet’ was its elimination of refined sugars. But, and there is a but to that point. We should allow for some sort of flexibility in our diets for that kind of thing without fully eliminating it. Why do we say this?

Because there is only a small percentage of the world’s population that would see this type of thing as the key to everlasting health for all eternity. In other words, there are more people like you and us in this world than there are superstars who make a few million pounds per movie.

Our diets should consist of a good balance of proteins, carbohydrates, fats and yes, some of the good things in life like chocolate, or ice cream. For this, there is science to back up the facts that allowing for the things that we enjoy in moderation, of course, are essential to balancing ourselves out and allowing us to have fun.

Be mindful of what you eat, make smart choices, and leave the craziness to Hollywood.
