“Work until your idols become your rivals” – Drake

‘Motivation’ is a theoretical construct used to explain behaviour. It represents the reasons for people’s actions, desires, and needs. Motivation can also be defined as one’s direction to behaviour or what causes a person to want to repeat a behaviour and vice versa.

Motivation is a battle ground. Sometimes we win. Sometimes we lose. It’s a hard fight. But if you’re willing to fight, it will serve you well in all aspects of your life. To succeed in anything, you need to have it. We need ways to motivate ourselves, so in this blog we’re going to give you a few ways to use it to your advantage.

Lets start…..

Dream – Dream big, or go home. In your head, there should be a million questions about how you are going to achieve greatness. About how you are going to achieve success. If you think you don’t have the ability to change things, then you are sorely mistaken.

It is never too late to make changes to our lifestyle in order to achieve your goals, dreams and aspirations. Decide what you want to do. Decide what you want out of life.

Do you know, or really believe, what you can become? Ask yourself what do you want to achieve in life. Don’t come up with a half arsed reason for not acting on your ideas. Use a very strong reason for achieving success. Your family. Your business. Your health.

You can always go beyond where you are now, and where you have been. Don’t fear failure. Don’t worry about looking foolish. Your present is not your end.

What is your why? Dream it. Achieve it.

Mirror, Mirror – There is one thing we can guarantee that we will see every single day. In fact, we see it several times a day. It’s your reflection. One of the first things we do every single day is look in the mirror.  You may have struggled to get out of your bed that morning, you may have ignored your alarm clock. You may feel like you’re going to have one of those days.

It’s difficult to stay positive every single minute of every single day, so don’t beat yourself up for that. It’s ok to have less than positive thoughts or a lapse in discipline. But, don’t beat yourself up for that. Instead, have something that motivates you from the moment you look yourself in the eye.

Many of us have a series of motivational triggers. Write them down.  Make a list of the things that push you forward every single day. Put them on the mirror. Put them on your wardrobe. Put them on your fridge. Put them on the kitchen cupboard. Put them somewhere you will see them.

Why? So it’s one of the first things you see every day. When you struggle to get out of bed. When you’ve hit the snooze button five times that morning. You see your triggers and you change your mindset. The doubts you had, disappear. They are replaced by actions. Actions that will ensure that you take another step forward that day.

Keep them simple and bulleted. You may have several pages of them. List the ones that are the most important to you.  These are your ‘reflection’ motivational triggers. Every time you look in the mirror and see your reflection, they are there. Every time you look at yourself and doubt yourself, they are there. Each and every day you have a series of points or triggers that let you refuse to give up.

Make sure that you think about them before you write them down. They will be individual to you, and you only. Make them achievable. Make them personal. Think about what motivates you. What inspires you. What drives you.

You wake up. You think it’s going to be one of those days. Look in the mirror, and look yourself in the eye. Look at your motivational triggers. Now look back at yourself. What are you going to do about it?

Learn – Knowledge is power. That doesn’t mean having a university education. You don’t need a PHD to achieve success in life. Many of the worlds greatest entrepreneurs had nothing before they grew a set of balls and took the plunge. They had guts, and they had ingenuity. They took a chance.

There is no such thing as an overnight success. It’s a long, long road. A musician who hits the big time with a single hasn’t been in the music business for two weeks. The have been gigging in terrible clubs with no-one paying attention to them. Travelling the country and sleeping in their cars. Having their demo’s thrown in the bin by thirty different record companies. They have worked tirelessly learning their craft and refining it. Learning from those who they idolise. Until one day, they find themselves competing with them.

Whatever it is that you want from life, learn about it. History is re-written every single day. History is being made right now. To create history takes hard work, and hours of learning, hustling, and persistence.

Remember this. If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.

Plan – To succeed, you need to plan. Failure to plan is planning to fail. Spend time planning how you are going to achieve your goals. Before this blog was written, a plan was made in order to write it. That said, remain flexible. Obstacle’s may arise. Move around them. Know what needs to be done, and you will have direction.

Mike Tyson famously said “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face”. He couldn’t be more right. What’s important is how they recover from that. Even though you may have a plan, you will make some mistakes. You will be criticised. You’ll feel alone at times. You may even feel stupid at times. Step by step, you will move forward.

Break down your pathway to success. Smaller goals make the bigger picture until eventually, you reach your dream.

Do it with passion, and never deviate from the direction you’re going in.

Positivity – In order to succeed, you need to surround yourself with a support network built on trust. People don’t like to see others succeed where they have failed. Don’t let these people stand in your way.

Move in circles with like minded people who will help you. Who will guide you. Who will inspire you. Who will motivate you. Who will pick you up, when you fail.

These people will help you grow. They will help you to become stronger. They will challenge you to become better. They want nothing more than to see you achieve great things.

Give these people your passion and your support. Return the faith they show in you. Inspire them. This is maybe the most powerful motivation of all. Helping others will empower you to achieve big things. Give others confidence, value and guidance and this will, without doubt, enrich your life.

Implement these points. Dream big. Be motivated by the very person looking back at you. They are your challenger. Your only competition.

Gain knowledge. Plan ahead, and plan to win. Gather your troops and win the battle for success together.
