Coconut oil is on the rise in the health and fitness world. The oil that is extracted from the body of the coconut not long ago had a bad reputation due to the fact that it contains ‘trans-fats’. These types of fats are linked to obesity, and in many cases, heart disease. That said, new studies have found it to be very beneficial to fat loss.

Why? Due to it’s thermogenic, or heat, properties. It is suited for use in cooking at high temperatures, due to its ability to stabilise because of the fat content. Dependent on the way that the oil is extracted from the flesh, depends on the quality.

Virgin coconut oil is extracted in an unrefined way in order to leave it tasting, and smelling, like the thing we know and love. Coconut. Other refined oils are bland. Varying on colour, it will come in a paste like form.

That said, it is not the cheapest of oils to buy. Starting at around £5 – 7, it climbs substantially dependent on the quality. As we said earlier, its great for cooking due to the stable nature of the oil at high temperatures, so is now the go to substitute to other more common oils.

Great for fish, vegetables and good for baking, it is also used for other more uncommon uses such as insect bite treatment.

In terms of fat loss, try to use it sparingly at first. Try one spoonful a day. Add it to foods, protein shakes, and as with anything, gradually increase it. Try not to go over five spoonfuls a day (maximum).

Try  it, or drop in a comment into the section below to show how you use it, and why.
