Exercise.

The word didn’t exist for me two years ago.

I never counted myself as fit, never saw myself as a ‘runner’ and never anticipated I would stick to a gym, ever. I was the academic in the family, the girl with a book in her face from the age of five, the other sibling inherited the football gene, the sporty personality of the Sherlock family.

But here I am at Fitness Formation.

I moved to Lancaster in July 2014. I didn’t know anyone and had to start a completely new life on my own. It was hard, scary and lonely at times but little did I know all of that was about to change.

They say success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose, my success was and still is being welcomed into a family I never expected to have and having more valuable friends than ever before.

My former boss introduced me to Fitness Formation (FF) in November 2014. I wasnt keen at first, I was cynical, just seeing the small studio and thinking, people get results in this place? I’m not going to make friends in here? I don’t belong here, I don’t do exercise!

I was wrong.

After my first taster session I signed on the dotted line, overwhelmed and confused I had just joined a gym for a year, I felt sick.

Gemma Sherlock - Success Story

But this was the start of my journey. Working out with friends is proven to be more beneficial than on your own and do you know what I am proud to say I have benefitted from that.

I have done more at FF with the guidance of Ryan, Dan and Ben than ever before.

I have lost a stone since I started, have muscle definition, oh and I no longer need help carrying a suitcase up and down stairs.

I have conquered two Born Survivor’s and am currently training for the Great North Run in September, yes Gemma Sherlock is doing a half marathon!

FF has not just helped me physically but mentally and emotionally. Being away from family is hard but when you have another family supporting you, entertaining you and being there for you, it eases off the loneliness and home-sick feeling.

I have made some wonderful friends at FF and met my best friend Kayleigh Ineson at the studio, she has stuck by me from the moment I met her at the Christmas party (yes our gym even is a community outside – with day’s out and parties). We have been on holiday together, had our up’s and down’s but she is a great friend and workout partner and they say strength is in numbers.

So when I look to Ryan, Dan, and Ben and tell them thank you after each session, it is not only thanking them for a great one hour workout, but I am thanking them for changing my lifestyle, for giving me the opportunity to make some great friends, for supporting me from the beginning and for being my Lancaster family.

I never thought I would be able to run for six miles without struggling, never thought I would enjoy lifting weights and never thought I would belong in Lancaster.

But I do, I belong at FF and want to continue to be a part of their family forever.
