Four years ago, London lit up the world. As proud Brits, we all said that you’ll never beat London. You can try we said, but you won’t achieve it. Team GB wiped the floor across both games, and Rio had a lot of work to do to merely compete with it.

Well, just like that, another Olympic games has passed us by in the blink of an eye. And, by god, did Rio deliver on an epic scale. Forget all the political madness going on in the background surrounding their government. Brazil delivered on the greatest stage on earth.

Or more to the point, Team GB unleashed years of blood, sweat, tears and toil on the rest of the world. Apart from the  Americans, but let’s face it, they’re miles bigger than us and have infinitely more funding that we do!

Many people will say that the expectations set on the team prior to the commencement of the games were smoke and mirrors to take the weight off their shoulders after their heroics in London 2012. Whether it was or it wasn’t, they ripped that script up and wrote their own.

This blog will reflect on the learnings of another two weeks of history making, sleepless nights, and wondering what the hell to do with our time for the next four years.

Blog Title - Rio

Lesson #1 – Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. Many of the heroes who lit up the games for all nations involved have sacrificed everything to get on that start line, or more to the point, on that podium. Early starts, early nights, train, eat, train, eat, rest, and repeat. Some of them not just for the last four years, but the last eight, twelve, or even sixteen years. The level of dedication to their craft is mind blowing on every level.

As we’ve said in previous blogs, some of you reading this right now have a great chance of emulating these super humans, if you are prepared to give it all you’ve got to reach the top.

Lesson #2 – Teamwork is less me, more we. The level of togetherness demonstrated on a daily basis during the games was plain to see. Even those taking part in individual events still had an incredibly gifted team around them to guide them along to the podium. Surround yourself with people who will guide you, and not hinder you in anything and everything you do.

Lesson #3 – People with great passion can make the impossible happen. Passion can be directly related back to the first lesson. Some the athletes who medalled were written off, simply there to make up numbers. People didn’t bank on the passion they showed to put those people who doubted them in their place, and they chose the biggest stage of all to do so.

Lesson #4 – Winners focus on winning. Losers focus on winners. Unless you’re Usain Bolt, then you can focus on whatever the hell you want. Smile for the camera. Genius.
