In life, most of us have to work for a living. We find ourselves lucky in our industry. We’re lucky enough to be on our feet for most of the day. We’re constantly moving. We’re more alert. We’re more productive, and more focused. We burn more calories, too.

Some of you reading this won’t have that luxury. Many of you will be desk bound for most of the working day. You may have to travel a lot of miles to get to, and from work. You may have tight deadlines to meet. This blog column will to give you a few tips on how to turn the working day in your favour.

Swap your desk chair for a desk ball. Sitting on a gym ball engages your core, meaning you can increase calorie burn by 6% – 7% during your 8 hour working day.

Get up and move. If you need to speak to Steve in accounts, get up and walk there. Don’t email or phone him. And take the long way round. Studies suggest that this can increase productivity by 11% – 12%.

Drink water. Cold water. It can increase your calorie burning capabilities by 25% – 30% for around 30 minutes after. Especially when your metabolism is at it’s lowest. More often than not, this is around mid – morning, and mid – afternoon. Avoid the slump.

Take public transport. Get off a stop or two earlier and get a metabolic kick start before you begin your day. Not to mention getting some of that crisp, morning air.

Listen to music. Uplifting and inspiring music can lead to improvements in productivity of up to 15%. Perfect, if you have a spare 5 to 10 minutes, to get you revved up for the day ahead. Just don’t treat everyone around you to a sing song, if you use public transport!

Be prepared. If you know you have a busy day or week ahead, prep your meals the evening before or during the weekend for consumption during your working day. This way, you won’t be tempted to take a trip to the local shop to sample the underwhelming menu, or more importantly, skip lunch all together.
